Addictive potential of gambling products [TranslationAL]

Do gambling products vary in their potential to become addictive, leading some individuals to become pathological gamblers with compromised health and well-being for both themselves and those around them? Frank Peren and colleagues have developed a multi-criteria instrument to measure and evaluate the risk potential of gambling products: ASTERIG.*

Ten attributes of a product are used to rate each gambling product, such as betting on horses or soccer, playing roulette or poker machines, or buying lottery tickets. Detailed scales are provided for Rating each product on each criterion.

An expert group was convened to arrived at consensus Weightings for the ten criteria. These can be interpreted as the groups judgements about the relative importance of each criterion in minimising addiction potential.

ASTERIG is introduced here in Annalisa format, with the example for soccer bettting from the paper included. Later the possibility of varying the Weighting and Ratings and adding further products is introduced.

eASTERIG is available here.
